Complete Guide to Cleaning a Microwave

The-Complete-Guide-to-Cleaning-a-Microwave-1024x675

For more than 50 years, the microwave oven has been a time-saving appliance found in practically every kitchen. They’re simple to use, quick, and convenient—but they also tend to easily get dirty.

A dirty microwave is a breeding ground for bacteria and other pathogens to thrive in. Food spills offer nutrition and moisture, and by closing that filthy microwave door, you create the ideal environment for germs to flourish. Besides other health risks, a dirty microwave can also create lingering odors and possibly catch fire!

You’ll have to clean your microwave oven and other kitchen equipment regularly if you use them often. To prevent the spread of germs, you should clean and disinfect the exterior and keypad daily.

Here are six simple microwave cleaning tips that you should incorporate into your weekly cleaning routine to get the job done!

1. Distilled Vinegar

Distilled white vinegar is an excellent natural cleaner and sanitizer that can be used on various surfaces in your home. Fill two cups of water and two tablespoons of vinegar in a microwave-safe dish or big glass measuring cup. You can add a drop of your favorite essential oil to minimize the vinegar odor.

Microwave for five minutes on high power. You want things to get hot in there. Allow a further fifteen minutes before opening the door to ensure that all the baked-on filth has melted.

Carefully open the microwave door and remove the bowl with oven mitts. Then, wipe off the exterior and the interior of your microwave using a microfiber towel dampened with vinegar and water. You can also use a microfiber cloth on glass doors and shiny trims.

2. Lemon Juice

Lemon is not only a great cleaner but is also safe and acts as a natural deodorizer that will leave your microwave smelling fresh and shining clean.

Start by rubbing a lemon between your palms to release the juices. Then slice it in half and squeeze all of the juice into a microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water. Put the bowl in the microwave and add the lemon halves.

Microwave for five minutes on high, then leave aside for ten minutes. Carefully open the door and remove the bowl with oven mitts to avoid steam. Wipe down the exterior and the interior of your microwave with a microfiber towel moistened with your lemon and water solution.

3. Dish Soap

In a bowl of warm water, dissolve dish soap until suds appear. Clean the outside of your microwave with a microfiber cloth. Then clean the inside with a damp paper towel to remove any crumbs or debris.

Make sure the suds don’t get into the vents or fans. To eliminate grime and soap residue, wipe down all surfaces with damp paper towels.

4. Baking Soda

Baking soda is a great cleaner and natural deodorizer. It is mildly abrasive, which makes it ideal for removing microwave stains and buildup.

Make a thick cleaning paste with baking soda and water to remove baked-on filth and persistent stains. Allow five minutes for the paste to set in before wiping the paste and dirt away with a wet non-abrasive sponge. Wipe away the baking soda residue with damp paper towels. Baking soda can also be used in a standard oven and stove.

5. Window Cleaner

Important note: Most window cleaners contain Ammonia, which should never be used with other household cleaners.

Spray around ten pumps of window cleaner, or a two-second pour, into a microwave-safe bowl, and then add about a cup of water. While spraying the inside of the microwave, pay careful attention to baked-on and spills.

Then, put the bowl in the microwave on high for five minutes and carefully remove it. It will most likely be very hot.

Remove the turntable and rub it with a damp paper towel first, then a dry one.

Start at the top and work your way down. Do the same with the inside surfaces of the microwave. Make sure it’s thoroughly dry before moving on.

Finally, replace the turntable.
