Cleaning Card System

what-is-a-cleaning-card-system-and-how-it-will-reshape-your-cleaning-habits

Do you have a list of things around the house that you want to get done and conquer the day? Most of us wake up with the best of intentions in the morning. We have a lot of things in mind, but when it’s time to put on the work, we find ourselves distracted, tired, and unable to complete the ambitious list we start with.

If this all seems familiar to you, then no need to worry! There’s a simple yet effective approach to “systemize” your house cleaning and help you complete your tasks on time. It’s called the “Cleaning card system.”

Getting Started

The index card cleaning system should be divided into daily, weekly, and deep cleaning. To get started, you’ll need 12 3″ x 5″ lined index cards.

Daily Cleaning

Decide which household tasks you’d like to complete each morning. This can include

  • Making your bed
  • Washing and Dressing
  • Fixing and cleaning up after breakfast
  • Organizing the front room
  • Laundry
  • Scrubbing out the bathroom sink
  • Sweep the kitchen floor

Limit the number of tasks to 12 if you’re in a full mess and haven’t had much luck with daily housecleaning. Make a list of each task on an index card, so you have 12 index cards. As you get more practice and gain confidence, you will be able to add more jobs to your morning routine with ease.

For the first week, the goal is to perform all 12 daily tasks each morning. This is how it’s done. When you wake up, spread out the cards on your kitchen counter. Choose one task to complete, finish it, and then flip the card over.

Weekly Cleaning

Once you have completed your daily tasks for one week, it’s time to set up a weekly house cleaning schedule. This is a little more difficult to set up, but you’ll appreciate the freedom it provides. If you stick to the plan, you can keep up with your cleaning responsibilities every week.

Here’s how to do it. Buy or gather a 3′′ x 5′′ recipe card box and fill in the blank card dividers with the following information: Daily (where you will store the “daily” cards that you have previously prepared), Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Then, list all tasks on these cards that require your attention on different days of the week.

Here’s an example:

Label one card “Laundry” (top left corner) and write in the upper right corner how often you plan to do your normal laundry, such as “Monday, Wednesday, Friday.”  Put this card beneath the “Monday” divider.

Label a second card, “Vacuum,” in the top left-hand corner and write how often you expect to vacuum in the upper right-hand corner, e.g., “Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.” Place this card beneath the divider labeled “Tuesday.”

Label the third card, “Dust, “in the left-hand corner and mention the day you plan to dust (let’s say Friday). Place this card beneath the divider labeled “Friday.” Continue to perform all of the jobs you want each week.

Make sure you proceed with your weekly housecleaning cards for that day, after finishing your daily house cleaning cards first thing in the morning,

If you feel overwhelmed by these cleaning tasks, you can share your workload with our house cleaning service in Westford, MA, or even delegate all of it to our experienced pros!

Deep Cleaning

Just as you made cards for your daily and weekly cleaning tasks, do the same for a less frequent deep house cleaning, which can occur monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annually.

Again, list the task in the upper left-hand corner of the index card and the timing in the upper right-hand corner.

For example, you can prepare a card for vacuuming the baseboards in July and file it under the July divider. Pull out a deep cleaning job whenever time and energy allow (once you have completed your daily and weekly tasks).

Expect an Improvement in Your Cleaning Habits

A cleaning card system will help you build a healthy cleaning routine. It may take a little more time to construct and gather your index card system at first, but it’s a terrific method to stay organized and eliminate some of the guesswork!

The more you stick to it, the faster each task will get. Eventually, you will find yourself cleaning your home without mustering any extra willpower, and it will always be neat and orderly.
